POWER OUTAGES
(Information provided by New York State Public Service Commission)
During these hot and humid summer days, severe thunder storms may matrialize often and create power outages. The New York State Public Service Commission offers the following suggestions:
BE PREPARE FOR AN OUTAGE
- Keep a battery-operated flashlight and radio on hand. A supply of fresh batteries, matches and candles also is a good idea.
- Create a storage space for water, medications, and other food items that don't require cooking or refrigeration
- If possible, have one corded telephone (doesn't require electricity) in home and have a list of emergency numbers available
- Always keep your vehicle gas tank half full
- Plan an alternative cooking source such as camp stove or outdoor grill
- Have extra blankets, coats, hats and gloves available
- Consider buying a home use generator
DURING AN OUTAGE
- If power goes out, check to see if neighbors have power
- Call National Grid to report the outage 1-800-NIAGARA
- Call Local Emergency 911 to report
- Check on neighbors with special needs
- If you smell gas, leave your house immediately and Call 1-800-NIAGARA
- NEVER use gas grill or charcoal grill inside home - gives off harmful levels of carbon monoxide
- ALWAYS use a generator outside home. Generators need proper ventitlation. Remember to turn off main breaker before using generator. Generator may create electricity through de-energized lines and injure repair crews.
- If your basement floods before you have a chance to shut off electric and natural gas, DO NOT ENTER, CALL utility provider - 1-800-NIAGARA
